Anita Suji

PROJECT MANAGER

AECOM

I began my career in 2002, as a Quantity Surveying placement student, later moving across to Project Manager. I am now part of the Project Management leadership team. In my career I have worked as a Project Manager, Development Manager, Programme Manager and Employer’s Agent. I have worked in sectors including, sports, commercial and cultural for multiple blue-chip clients and public organisations. I have delivered projects within the UK and internationally including Cairo, Barbados and Copenhagen. I am currently working on the Canada Water masterplan which is a 53 acre mixed use redevelopment in the center of London .

My love of Architecture and an interest in Law lead to a careers officer recommending a degree in Quantity Surveying. I later trained as a Project Manager after finding that my natural skill set leaned more towards Project Management rather than Quantity Surveying.

Organisational and drive are some of my key skills. Project Management is a job which requires good people skills and I like to think that I am a good people person. As my career progressed I was required to learn new skills to allow me to be more strategic in my outlook and thinking.

I think that there are some current misconceptions of the construction industry. In most forward thinking organisations there should be no challenges for women working in the industry. We should work together to empower women within our organisations. Some of my biggest supporters are men !

I have been lucky with my experiences of working within the construction industry, but I have encountered some scepticism, particularly during the early part of my career as a young project manager. However, I overcome those and have built a career on the trust I have engendered in the teams I have worked within.

Many construction professionals are from a range of backgrounds, we know that this provides the foundations for a high performing team. Many skills are transferrable to the construction industry and its quite likely that you already have some of these skills. A career in construction is very challenging but rewarding you are constantly learning and it provides great satisfaction to be part of delivering a lasting legacy for the future generations to enjoy !
