Inspiring females to consider working in the construction industry, by celebrating those that already do.
At its core, SHE BUILDS UK is a portrait photography project with a primary aim of inspiring females of all ages to consider a career in the construction industry.
By celebrating a diverse group of women that already work in the industry, and bringing them into the spotlight with photography, written profiles and exhibitions, I hope to create role models of them that younger girls (like my daughter) and women can be inspired by - they are our rockstars!
At the same time, I want their stories and profiles to illustrate the incredibly varied roles that exist within the industry; revealing that it’s not just about brute strength and working on a building site, that it’s actually an industry that women can (and do) work and excel in.
It is clear that there is a wider conversation to be had beyond this project and those involved in it. It’s why I want SHE BUILDS UK to play a role in the education of STEM subjects for young girls.
The third aim of the project is to produce a programme of content and / or options that can be delivered to, or used by, schools and careers events. And, as of May 1st, 2023, nearly 250 schools from all over the country have already registered their interest in the project.
In a nutshell…
-
To address gender inequality in the UK’s construction industry, inspiring females of all ages to consider working in the industry by celebrating those that already do.
-
To use photography, written profiles and exhibitions to create role models and rockstars from the construction industry.
-
To design and deliver a programme for schools and careers events that can be used as part of teaching around STEM subjects and construction.
