Arti Gurjar
SENIOR TECHNICAL CO-ORDINATOR
ST. WILLIAM (BERKELEY)
My interest in the construction industry comes from my father. He once owned a small construction business and I remember days going onto site with him and being excited by all the tools, materials and structures.
Having developed an interest in art and graphics at school, I took a subject called graphical communication during my A-Levels. I learned how to draw 3D visuals on a drawing board and this kickstarted my interest in studying Architecture. A conversation with the school careers advisor, let to me studying Architecture at university.
Although I love drawings, it was actually being on a construction site which excited me more - the childhood excitement of tagging along with my father hadn’t faded!
Throughout my early career as an architect, I requested projects which were at construction status so I could gain knowledge and insight of how my drawings progressed into tangible entities.
I eventually moved on to work at a housing developer and am currently located on a construction site working within the technical department assisting the site team. I enjoy using my problem-solving skills in this particular role.
Despite there being many reforms and platforms for more women to join the construction industry, it is still very male-dominated.
That said, it really is an exciting industry to invest yourself in. It’s vast and has so much to offer and so many opportunities to grow and develop.
