SENIOR URBAN DESIGNER
MACE
I was raised to believe that I have so many opportunities to become who I want to be. And that it is up to me and my personal determination, and courage, to try.
I have always been interested in arts and creative industries but thought I could never be good in technical details. And, when I was younger, the built environment seemed more suited for men.
However, my mum, who was a working single-parent and strong female personality, encouraged me to pursue an architecture degree because it involved a balance between creative and technical industries. I also loved the idea that architecture can impact and improve so many lives for better.
I was very desperate to leave home after high school and move abroad to live independently.
It worked out well because in 2006 I came to the UK to study architecture! I didn’t know that I would become an urban designer and be involved in some of the largest masterplanning and urban design projects across the country and abroad.
In my 15 years experience in the industry, I have seen female dominance in the industry increasing hugely, which is so inspiring!
However, I do think women still face many challenges, particularly when starting a family and returning from maternity leave.
My advice, though, is to not be afraid to try. There are so many inspiring females in leading positions that will help you.
