PROCESS ENGINEER

BECHTEL

I am currently working at Bechtel as a Graduate Process Engineer, working in Engineering, Procurement and Construction within the Energy GBU.  In a nutshell, I build huge plants that generate energy used to power our houses and factories. Since graduating chemical engineering at the University of Manchester, I have worked within a variety of industries including Geotechnics, Rail, Data Analytics, Financial Chemicals M&A and more recently R&D Food Manufacturing.

Engineering is a fantastic example of a diverse industry, acting as a hub for nurturing all forms of creativity and innovation. This is exactly why the industry is constantly changing, with new technological breakthroughs and inspiring ideas emerging every year. Regardless of the field, a career in engineering is guaranteed to fascinate and inspire you and enable you to move mountains.

An interesting fact about myself, is I love the sea: I enjoy swimming, scuba diving and when the weather is just right, I look forward to sailing along the south coast.

As an engineer, my key skills include a competent understanding of chemical engineering principles, mathematics and problem solving, Python Programming Language, a growing interest in Modelling & Simulation, and general Stakeholder and Project Management.

One of the many challenges women face in the construction industry today is the lack of post Maternity Leave support. When women return from Maternity Leave, there is a worry that their career progression may be put on pause, and they may not be considered for the same opportunities as their peers. Having worked in industry, I have seen the positive impacts on women when their companies provide the right balance of support. When this is unavailable, it leads to female employee retention to be significantly impacted, and we lose a lot of talent as a result.

If interested in joining the industry, it is important to research the company's Culture and Values and see if they align with your own. When you join a company, there will be communities that you can join to champion better cultures and drive change internally.
