Hannah Yorwerth
PUBLIC HEALTH ENGINEER
AECOM
I work as a Graduate Public Health Engineer, in Building Services at Aecom. I help design water-related services in buildings.
I have always been interested in technical design. At school I loved hands on classes like Design & Technology and Art. I went on to study Engineering at the University of Warwick as I knew I wanted a career where I could make a difference.
Building Services is a great mix of designing and problem-solving, and has a massive impact on how sustainable the built environment is.
At the moment most of the people in Building Services, and therefore the people I interact with, are men. This sometimes makes it hard to get involved with conversations, especially casual ones. I’m not a very loud person, so being quiet and female I sometimes have to work even harder to be heard.
But, I really enjoy my work! It’s different from day to day and I always get to work on interesting projects (and go and visit them!), whether that’s a hospital or a very fancy building in London.
All the women that I get the chance to work with are really good at their jobs because they’re considerate and pay attention to detail. Therefore, please give Building Services and similar industries a chance!
Oh, and in my free time, when I’m not making buildings work, I play Ultimate Frisbee and will be representing GB at the European Championships in Ireland this Summer!
