Katie Kelleher

TECHNICAL & DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

CPA

I changed career in 2014 after a number of years working in sales and recruitment, and joined the lifting technician apprenticeship with Select Plant Hire.

I’ve worked as a crane operator and appointed person on large, well-known London projects, including Crossrail & Tideway. I now use my strong social media presence to change the face of construction by encouraging more women into the field.

Sadly, I wasn’t always attracted to the industry because women didn’t go into construction when I was in school. While working in Trades & Labour recruitment, I noticed that I could earn much more money in construction than I was at the time. I sent my CV to multiple companies and Laing O’Rourke called me to ask if I’d be interested in becoming a crane operator. I began an apprenticeship with them and this gave me an opportunity to learn new skills and to change my life.

Construction is a unique industry and for those that want to go far, the industry will support you, train you and push you further than you ever could have imagined. The possibilities and scale of the industry are huge! It’s evolving and changing constantly, and there really is a place for everyone.

Do your research into positions and find a company with an ethos that aligns with your own. Take that first step you wont regret it, I never did.

Away from work, I enjoy collecting retro games consoles and trainers!
