Communication through the lens of art, design and architecture is my vessel for reaction, expression and storytelling within the world. I take great joy in the operation between these creative disciplines to get unexpected outcomes that move away from the convention and systemisation of our built environment.
As a young woman beginning a career in construction I always felt that I had to work harder to prove my position, develop a "thick skin" to absorb uncertainty and commentary around my gender and image, and change the way I behaved and presented myself to suit an all male environment.
I got all of this wrong. What I wish I had been told is work hard but don't feel you have to work any harder in order to justify or prove your worth in an underrepresented position. You should not have to develop a "thick skin" because of what surrounds you.
Conserve that energy to stay responsive and listen closely to those around you. Lean into those that are supportive and open to you and have the confidence to have your voice and speak out when needed. Always call out unjust behaviour - it is not okay.
Fundamentally, do not change who you are to fit the role of an historic stereotype - stay sensitive, stay delicate, stay caring and stay feminine if that's who you are.
